Gingival eruption of the permanent teeth of Australopithecus, Paranthropus, and early Homo, diagnosed from enamel scratches and facets, is similar save for two sequences: eruption of the canines relative to the premolars which may be sexually dimorphic; and agenesis of M3 with delayed eruption of M2, first seen in Homo at two million years. Gingival eruption sequences are similar also for early and modern Homo, except that in some individuals today M3, M2, M1 and I2 take longer to form and emerge through the gingiva as functioning teeth. Probably, from two million years to the present in the evolutionary history of Homo dental development slowed-down. More and more of ontogeny has been taken over for eruption. 相似文献

Aim The aim of this paper is to analyse fossil charcoal deposits, largely identified to the species level and spanning a sequence from the late Holocene to < 40,000 BP , in order to reconstruct Late Quaternary vegetation and climatic patterns in the western (winter-rainfall) fynbos biome of South Africa. Location The charcoals were excavated from the Elands Bay Cave (32°19S, 18°20E) on the semiarid (200–250 mmyr?1), winter-rainfall coastline of the western fynbos biome. Methods Patterns in the charcoal data set over time were sought by manual sorting of the charcoal×sample matrix, as well as by subjecting the data to multivariate analysis. Palaeoclimatic reconstruction was attempted by comparing the climatic controls on contemporary vegetation communities that resembled the fossil assemblages. Charcoal diversity was modelled using sample age and number of charcoal fragments as explanatory variables. Results The fossil assemblages ranged from xeric communities (similar to those presently occurring at the site) during the Holocene, to more mesic thicket and fynbos vegetation in the terminal Pleistocene, to Afromontane forest and riverine woodland communities after about 18,000 BP . Diversity of the charcoal samples increased monotonically with increasing sample age. Main conclusions The results suggest that, unlike the eastern fynbos biome, which is under fundamentally different climatic controls, soil moisture conditions in the western part of the biome were higher in the Last Glacial than during the Holocene. This scenario may help to explain the higher regional richness and associated diversification in the western than eastern part of the biome. 相似文献

A fossil carabid (Coleoptera) belonging to the subfamily Promecognathinae is described from Cretaceous crater lake deposits at Orapa, Botswana. The specimen, which is the first ever fossil promecognathine, is placed in a new genus Palaeoxinidium. The fossil supports a Cretaceous age determination for the sediments, and it indicates that the Orapa crater was, at least in part, heavily vegetated at the time of deposition. Cladistic analysis of the fossil and extant Promecognathinae indicates that the fossil represents the sister group of the extant taxa and that the latter, in turn, comprise a pair of sister groups. It is, therefore, proposed that the Promecognathinae should be divided into two tribes: the Palaeoaxinidiini, represented by the fossil, and the Promecognathini, represented by the extant groups. The Promecognathini should be subdivided further into the subtribes Promecognathina and Axinidiina, represented by the American and African species, respectively. Three alternative zoogeographic hypotheses that explain the distributions of the fossil and extant promecognathines are discussed and tests for the hypotheses are proposed. 相似文献

Summary From a study of two areas, Jesira and the Bajuni Archipelago, about 400 km apart, a general pattern can be established for
the Recent facies, together with the morphological and taxonomic features of the corals. Present day coral development is
characterized by true fringing reefs in the Bajuni Archipelago and by scattered patches and knolls in the Jesira area. The
coral fauna, consisting of 27 genera and 63 species so far (including all uncertainties, but not sight records), is rather
poor, though coral communities are locally well developed. These figures probably reflect incomplete study and sampling. Although
comparison with other areas may therefore be premature, a preliminary biogeographical analysis suggests that this fauna is
more closely related to that of the Red Sea than to East Africa and the Seychelles. This differs from other published biogeographical
work on Indian Ocean coral faunas, but further study of the corals in this and neighbouring areas of the Indian Ocean is needed

Fungal fruiting bodies ignored in earlier palynological investigations of the Subathu and Dagshai Formations have been studied from sediments exposed in the Dadahu Jamtah area, Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh. Taxa belonging to the genera Notothyrites, Asterothyrites, Parmathyrites, Phragmothyriles and Microthyriacites have been identified. The extra-thecal epithelia of cryofixed undecalcified, freeze-substituted polyps of the scleractinian corals Galaxea fascicularis and Tubastrea faulkneri and axial and basal polyps of Acropora formosa have been examined, in anhydrously prepared thick slices, by confocal laser scanning light microscopy. The avoidance of chemical fixation and decalcification makes it possible to determine whether previously seen structures are real or artefactual products of swelling, shrinkage and distortion. All of the epithelia of all the corals examined are characterised by well defined intercellular spaces. Mucocytes are present in all cell layers in Galaxea and Tubastrea but are not present in any cell layers in the axial polyp of Acropora although they are abundant in the oral ectoderm of the basal polyps in this coral. Zooxanthellae are absent in Tubastrea, the epithelia of the exert septa of Galaxea and the axial polyp of Acropora. The calicoblastic ectoderm is generally composed of thin squamous cells with large intercellular spaces. At rapidly calcifying regions such as the tips of the exert septa of Galaxea, the calicoblastic cells are elongated with extensive arborisation of the basal regions of the cells. They are separated by large intercellular spaces and contain numerous fluorescent granules. The apical regions of these cells appear to be closely applied to the surface of the skeleton. There is no evidence of a space between the apical region of the calicoblastic cells and the skeleton. 相似文献

Middle to Late Cretaceous permineralized plants hitherto described from Hokkaido, Japan are summarized. The fossil flora comprises
fungi, ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms. Many modern fern families have been recognized including Anemiaceae, Cyatheaceae,
Dennstaedtiaceae, Gleicheniaceae Loxsomaceae, Lygodiaceae and Matoniaceae. Gymnosperms are most abundant in the flora. Some
recently-found materials are tentatively introduced with brief comments emphasizing their morphological and taxonomical significance.
A bisporangiate flower ofCycadeoidella japonica Ogura shows fine internal anatomy and provides evidence that the cycadeoidalean ovule was a cupulate, unitegmic structure.
Vascular tracheids in the synangial wall support the evolution of cycadeoidalean synangia from Paleozoic seed-fern synangia.
A new gymnosperm female fructification has a thick envelope comparable to an angiosperm carpel around a large seed. The angiosperms

Synopsis A total of 121 actinistian species belonging to 47 genera and 17 undetermined actinistians is reported from the literature. There are 69 valid species with fair assessment of their phylogenetic position; 21 valid species with poor assessment of their phylogenetic position; 31 actinistian incertae sedis; and 18 taxa that had been identified incorrectly as actinistians or are nomen nuda. Summary In an attempt to resolve some points of branching order in the phylogeny of the eutherian mammals, a phylogenetic analysis of 26 nuclear and 6 mitochondrial genes was undertaken using a maximum likelihood method on a constant rate stochastic model of molecular evolution. Seventeen of the nuclear genes gave a primates/artiodactyls grouping highest support whereas three of the mitochondrial genes found a rodents/artiodactyls grouping to be best supported. The primates/rodents grouping was never the best supported. On the assumption that rodents are indeed an outgroup to primates and artiodactyls and that the latter taxa diverged 70 million years ago, an estimation was made, for each gene, of the time of divergence of the rodent lineage. In most cases such estimates were beyond the limits set by present interpretations of the paleontological record as were many estimates of the divergence time of mouse and rat. These results suggest that, although there is locus variation, the divergent position of the rodent lineage may be an artifact of an elevated rate of nucleotide substitution in this order. 相似文献
